Morris M. Engle
(b. 2-2-1882)
formerly of Hummelstown, Pa
"Became acquainted with dates of Engle
Family and became author, with assistants."

In 1927, when History of the Engle Family
in America, 1754 - 1927 was published, Morris Engle
wrote of himself that he was "born and educated in Lower
Swatara township, entered the mercantile business, employed
with S.F. Engle Store, Palymyra, Penna. 1913 with his
family moved to Hummelstown, Pa., and purchased the store
stock of W.J. Bassler, Railroad and Main streets, which
business he continued to this date. Became acquainted with
dates of Engle Family and became author, with assistants."
Whatever the errors, omissions, discrepancies,
and flights of fancy of Morris Engle's opus, there can be
no doubt that his work has given us as a family a sense of
identity we would otherwise lack. Most branches of the family
can claim at least one well-worn copy, and the stories Morris
Engle told of the family whose dates he had become acquainted
with have no doubt taken hold in many of our imaginations.
Some of those stories will be reprinted here.
