My husband,
Donald D. Engle, and I live in Mount Joy, Lancaster County, Pennsylvnia,
a few miles from the original Ulrich Engle homesite at Wildcat near
Marietta. Within a short distance is the "Magdalena
House" built by Yokeli Engle,
Ulrich's son, and the only infant to survive the Atlantic crossing.
Outside of town are the homes of my Engle ancestors who went with
the Pennsylvania colony to settle in Abilene, Kansas, around 1880.
I grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina listening to
my grandmother Emma Juanita Engle Zimmerman tell "Engle stories"
from Abilene, and Lancaster County. I was fascinated by the "Engle
Book" and dreamed someday of visiting Lancaster County. While
living in Washington, DC and tracing my specific Engle line, I became
confused by the many "Johns" and "Jacobs." My
great uncle Jake Engle referred me to Donald Engle in Lancaster
County. for assistance. Don untangled the Engle web for my line
which is truly "woven" among the various branches. Subsequently,
cousins and I made several trips to visit relatives, both living
and dead in Lancaster County. I felt very fortunate to know when
my ancestors arrived in America and where they settled. Moreover,
the family history showed my ancestors to be industrious, self-reliant
and highly principled both in their daily lives and in their faith.
A decade later in an unusual
twist of fate, Don and I married. Fortunately, we both shared an
interest in the family genealogy which has given us many wonderful
visits with extended family around the country. Don introduced me
to John H. and Anna K. Engle of Palmyra, their siblings, Harold
and Alma, and sons, Drs. John and Eugene who shared even more Engle
stories and their valuable research. We also learned of David and
Vi Engle and Mary Lynn Richardson who have a strong commitment to
the preservation of the family history.
Currently Don and I are
involved with cataloguing the Mary Jane Engle Wolfe papers at the
Messiah College Archives which were collected from Engle relatives
to update the Morris Engle book. Also, we are part of a group which
is developing the Engle Family Association and planning an Engle
reunion to be held in Lancaster County. in the summer of 2004. We
often give "Engle Tours" to visiting relatives and expand
our knowledge in the process. Finally, we have encouraged and collected
family group sheets for the family data base which is an ongoing
project. We are proud to report the family names of Engle, Shelly,
Anna (Annie), Catherine (Katie), John, Jacob, Barbara, David, Daniel,
Samuel, Benjamin, Mary, and Elizabeth are faithfully used in our
families today.
Having recently helped
in the organization of two local family meetings attended by 90
Engle descendants, we look forward to the reunion in 2004. We encourage
all descendants to become involved in the Engle Family Association,
reunion, book update, website and other projects.
